It’s no secret that we see Amsterdam as a hub of creative activity, but what about the rest of Europe? What kind of policies can be put in place to stimulate the growth and influence of the creative industries throughout the EU? How can cultural diversity in this sector be used as a competitive advantage?

On 4-5 February, experts and industry representatives from across the EU gathered in Amsterdam to tackle these questions and more.

This workshop was organized by the European Commission and hosted the City of Amsterdam, the European Design Centre, the Association of Dutch Designers and IIP Create. It resulted in a declaration to address key issues, including the suggestion to develop a “European Creative Industries Alliance.”

The declaration identified challenges and made suggestions for the progress of the creative sector in Europe:

  • How can we better (financially) support entrepreneurship and growth?
  • How can Europe’s cultural diversity be used as an asset?
  • What new policies can help us take full advantage of Europe’s talents?
  • How can we better cooperate across borders in the EU?
  • How do innovations and inspiration from this sector impact other industries?

Geleyn Meijer of IIP Create summed up their achievements:
“Amsterdam has demonstrated its position as a place where creative minds, entrepreneurship and collaboration come together. Besides acting as the gateway to the Netherlands, Amsterdam will take on the role of forerunner in the European Creative Industries Alliance. Together with the support our sector gets from the national programmes, the Alliance will further help to grow our industry.”
